Embryo Transfer and Pregnancy Test
After fertilization in the laboratory by an experienced embryology team, the embryos are carefully monitored for 2 to 6 days. During this period, embryologists evaluate cell division, embryo quality, and developmental progress. The healthiest and highest-quality embryo (or embryos) are selected for transfer into the uterus.
Embryo transfer is one of the most important and delicate stages of IVF treatment. The procedure is simple, painless, and does not require anesthesia in most cases. Using a soft and specially designed catheter, the selected embryo is gently placed into the uterus under ultrasound guidance. This ensures precise placement within the uterine cavity to maximize implantation success. The entire procedure typically takes 5–10 minutes and is performed in a comfortable clinical setting.
Following the embryo transfer, the IVF process enters what is often called the “two-week wait.” This period can be emotionally challenging for couples, as they wait to learn whether the treatment has been successful. During this time, it is important for the patient to remain calm, avoid excessive stress, and follow the medical team’s instructions carefully.
What to Expect After Embryo Transfer
After the transfer procedure, patients are usually advised to rest briefly at the clinic before returning home. Complete bed rest is not required; however, strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, and intense exercise should be avoided. Light daily activities are generally safe.
The patient may take a warm shower the day after the transfer. Extremely hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms should be avoided during this period, as excessive heat may negatively affect implantation.
Mild cramping, light spotting, or breast tenderness may occur after embryo transfer. These symptoms are generally related to hormonal medications and do not necessarily indicate treatment success or failure.
Sexual intercourse is not recommended during the waiting period until the pregnancy test is performed. This precaution is advised to minimize uterine contractions and ensure optimal conditions for implantation.
Pregnancy Test After IVF
The pregnancy test is performed approximately 12 days after embryo transfer. A blood test measuring beta-hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels provides the most accurate result. Home pregnancy tests are not recommended before the scheduled blood test, as they may lead to misleading results due to hormone medications used during treatment.
If the pregnancy test result is positive, hormone support medications such as progesterone and estrogen are continued. These medications help support the uterine lining and early pregnancy development. Even when the test result is positive, medication is typically not discontinued during the first trimester. Hormonal support generally continues for up to 10–12 weeks of pregnancy, depending on the physician’s recommendation.
If the pregnancy test result is negative, the medical team will evaluate the cycle and discuss the next steps with the couple. In some cases, frozen embryos may be available for future transfer, which can shorten and simplify subsequent treatment cycles.
The period after embryo transfer is just as important as the earlier stages of IVF treatment. Emotional well-being, proper medication use, and adherence to medical guidance significantly influence overall success rates.
